Apostrophe Rules!



1.               You’re/ Your
you’re = you + are
your = ownership

2.               Singular Possessive Proper noun ending in s = add ‘s
That is Mrs. Lluberes’s pen.

3.               Plural possessives ending in s or z
The Llubereses’ are so amazing.
I am going to the Cruzes’ later.

4.               Who’s/ Whose
who’s = who is
whose = ownership

5.               Adjectives ending in s = no apostrophe
That is the arts building.

6.               Abbreviation plurals = no apostrophe
TVs, DVDs

7.               Letters = apostrophe
I got all A’s!

8.               Possesive singular nouns = add ‘s
That dress’s bow is pink.

9.               Plural common nouns that end in y  = ies
candy = candies, story = stories
10.         General contractions = ‘d
he did = he’d, she did = she’d, we did = we’d, I did – I’d

11.         Numbers = no apostrophe
1970s

12.         It’s / its
it’s = it is
its = ownership

13.         Plural proper noun not ending in s or z = no apostrophe
The Smiths house is huge.

14.         Unshared noun possession = 2 or more apostrophes
2+ nouns = 2+ apostrophes
Those are Jim’s and Tom’s tools.
